Wendy JensenQ. What inspired you to become a writer?
A. As a veterinarian, I’ve long been interested in the animal welfare side of things. I also believe that every treat other species well, it’s just as important to treat our own humans well. So I wanted to write a book about the link between caring for animals and caring for us. That’s how my novel But I Already Said Goodbye came about.

Q. If one of your characters showed up at your front door, who would it be?
A. It would be Amber, the main character! She would probably be holding a stray kitten to her chest and asking me if I knew where the wee one’s home was. We’d have to go out and figure out the best place for the little one to live!

Q. What snack or drink fuels your writing sessions?
A. I’m a big fan of kombucha, because it has just the right mix of frizzy, flavor, and mushrooms. And I don’t have to do anything more than pull it out of the fridge!

Q. Do you have any strange or unusual writing habits?
A. I’ve learned that when an idea comes to me, especially for a poem, I have to drop everything and start writing. So you could find me writing in my car in the parking lot, on my hammock on my back deck, in the library, or on the side of the road during a run, as long as I have a bit of paper and pencil tucked into my fanny pack. Then that gem of an idea is protected for serious work later.

Q. What kind of reader do you imagine you’re writing for?
A. The one who cares deeply about animals and has seen incredible personalities in many different furry ones. The one who thinks first about their companion animal at home when they’re planning a trip before they make any other decisions. The one who thinks everybody is worth protecting whether they’re rich or poor, animal or human, beautiful or plain. I write for those passionate souls who are making the world a better place!
