Ian M. Rogers

Ian M. Rogers is an author, editor, and instructor in the online MFA program at Western Connecticut State University. He grew up in New Hampshire before studying literature at Bennington College in Vermont and creative writing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and taught English in Japan for many years, most recently at Kanagawa University in Yokohama. His novels include Carcrash Parker and the Haven of Larpers (2025) and MFA Thesis Novel (2022), both published by Vine Leaves Press, and the chapbook Eikaiwa Bums (2018), published by Blue Cubicle Press.

In addition to his work editing academic writing, fiction, and memoir, Ian is a regular presenter at conferences, bookstores, and libraries, where he speaks about his own work, small-press publishing, and writing craft topics. In particular, he has presented at the NH Writers Project 603 Conference (2025), the Western Connecticut State University Winter Residency (2024-2026) and the Japan Writers Conference in Tokyo (2025), as well as online for SCORE Small Business Mentoring (2024).

Ian’s writing is best described as “literary fiction with jokes.” His work explores the issues facing American millennials, including financial struggles, dead-end jobs, and relationship issues, especially when they’re also trying to pursue creative goals. He reads widely across genres, with a special love of twentieth century fiction and Japanese literature in translation.

MFA Thesis Novel

Creative ne’er-do-well Flip Montcalm isn’t cut out for office life, so he jumps at the chance to join an MFA program in the rural Midwest. Broke and infatuated with the 20th century literary canon, he alienates his writing workshop with five hundred pages of existential dread, can’t name a single player on the university football team, and is actively trying to steal a rival writer’s girlfriend.

Flip needs a new novel idea fast, so he turns to his cohorts for help: a career PhD student who hasn’t written in a decade, a professor with no opinions, a narcissist whose novels read like action movies, and a frat boy underplaying his suburban privilege. As he fights off academic conformity and obsessive football fans, Flip faces the challenge of writing a novel that’ll not only satisfy his artistic passions, but might even get him a better job.

A delicious romp through the smudged halls of academia, this book will make you laugh out loud, as pretenders, druggies, hapless romantics, and the slightly talented do battle in fiction, trying to invent a book that will save them from the fate of ordinary life.

Carcrash Parker and the Haven of Larpers

Glimrick Therrinbottom, humble bard and devoted LARPer, is on a noble quest to defeat the legendary Rogue of Bulafar—until he’s unceremoniously kicked out of his group for keeping the wrong company. That “wrong company” is Carcrash Parker: pop culture fanatic, vintage video game collector, and high school nostalgia addict who wouldn’t be caught dead in a foam sword fight. When Carcrash’s beloved Commodore 64 goes missing, the unlikely duo sets off on a not-so-epic journey to get it back. But what begins as a simple retrieval mission spirals into a bizarre adventure that blurs the line between fantasy and reality, threatening both their worlds.

Equal parts Kevin Smith and J.R.R. Tolkien, Carcrash Parker and the Haven of Larpers is a hilarious, heartfelt collision of old-school fantasy, ’80s and ’90s cult classics, and the magic of friendship. Get ready for a genre-bending quest like no other.

All pre-orders ship to arrive around July 22 when the novel is released. This copy comes SIGNED, and a larger portion of the proceeds go to the author than if you buy from elsewhere!

Eikaiwa Bums
Life at an English conversation school in Japan is hard: the ONIX Corporation’s lesson structure doesn’t hold water, no one gives your questions a straight answer, and there’s absolutely no questioning the rules! Can the story’s twentysomething narrator navigate this treacherous world and maybe even date a flirtatious student in the process?

This chapbook was published by Blue Cubicle Press as Hour 49 of the Overtime series and comes signed by me. Plus, I’ll even write something cool in it for you (choose the Personalized option below!).
