Paul Henry Carr lectures on climate at Rivier University, Eckerd College, & New Hampshire University/OLLI. While leading the AF Research Lab’s development of the tiny SAW filters used in radar and cell phones, he published over 90 scientific papers and was awarded 10 patents. He enjoyed teaching philosophy courses at U Mass Lowell. He holds a BS & MS from MIT, a PhD from Brandeis, and is an IEEE, IRAS, & ASA Fellow.

Beauty in Science and Spirit
The awesome beauty of nature lured ancient people to explain the world with myths, illumined by art. The mathematical beauty of modern science emerged from the mystical beauty of these spiritual stories. Today, Einstein’s language of mathematics frames the evolution of the beautiful universe. Charles Darwin explained the evolution of “forms most beautiful” by variations and the natural selection law in 1859. Nevertheless, the intelligent design community still doubts Darwin. How could a process having randomness lead to life and even beauty? Dr. Carr shows how randomness coupled with law is creative, as evidenced by mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot’s recent discovery that fractal geometry permeates nature’s beauty, from snowflakes to the branching of plants and lungs. Both fractals and evolution are characterized by the interplay of chance and necessity. This interplay can be extended to science and spirit. The scientific account of the origin of the universe complements that of spiritual stories. Each can be beautiful in its own way, because spiritual and scientific stories have different purposes. Spiritual stories answer “why” and give guidance and motivation for living now and in eternity. Scientific theories explain “how,” give a coherent rational account of measurements, and make predictions. Integration of the “how” with the “why” can lead to a beautiful new story that transcends national and cultural differences. Born in Boston, MA during the Great Recession, I raised pigs with my Methodist minister father in Cabot, VT. How did I become a Ph.D.? Growing up in rural Vermont, I loved science, but my High School did not have the advanced math courses needed for admission to the Mass Institute of Technology (MIT). I nevertheless earned my B.S. and M.S. degrees there. After Army service, I completed my Ph.D. in experimental physics at Brandeis University in 1966.
As a GS-15 Branch Chief at the Air Force Research Laboratory, I published over 90 papers and was awarded 10 patents. These helped develop the tiny, inexpensive Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) components used in cell phones and radar. In 1979, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) elected me a Fellow. Retiring in 1995, I received a letter of congratulation and appreciation from President Bill Clinton.
I then fulfilled my love of philosophy and theology by teaching my “Science and Religion: Cosmos to Consciousness” course at U Mass Lowell. This inspired my book Beauty in Science and Spirit (2006), illustrated with my nature photography.
My romanticlove for aspiring opera soprano, Karin Hansen, blossomed into our happy marriage, with five beautiful daughters. Then 25 years later, Karin tragically died of leukemia. How did I find the parental love to raise our three youngest daughters, ages 12, 14, and 16?
After championing an Institute of Religion in an Age of Science (IRAS) climate change conference in 2017, I became an IRAS Academic Fellow.
For 40 years, I made my home in Bedford, MA. Why did I move 40 miles north to Bedford NH?
