Do your personal experiences influence the stories or subjects you write about?
Yes. My novel is heavily influenced by my upbringing in the Methodist church as well as my struggles with alcoholism and addiction and from my decades of being a mechanic. My work, I feel has a certain cynicism that only that particular combination of things can produce.
Do you have a favorite scene or moment from one of your books?
Definitely the confrontation between Amon and Ash outside of Ash’s house in Lexington from Pestilence. Ash just loves messing with people, and really gives the fallen angel a run for his money.
Where do you usually write?
In my mobile office. AKA my car. My wife and I live in a small apartment along with my daughter and my grandson. Finding a quiet moment to write is near impossible so pop into the ol Infiniti, drive about a half a block away, park and write away. It’s not ideal but I can smoke cigarettes and if I need a coffee, all I have to do is put her in drive.
Which of your characters is most like you?
While all of my main characters are a part of me in some way, even Eva, the character most like me is definitely Ash. He is foul mouthed, smokes cigarettes, drinks gas station soda by the bucket full and is unapologetically himself. Really the only difference between me and him is that he appears to be 15 years old. I am almost 50.
What snack or drink fuels your writing sessions?
Coffee. Lots n lots of coffee
What is the strangest compliment you’ve ever received about your writing?
It was from my friend who does a podcast he said “I didnt even know he could spell, nevermind write an amazing almost 400 page novel.”
Little did he know I bought myself a Speak and Spell™.
